Urban Trailblazers
Urban Trailblazers (UTB) is an environmental youth leadership program offered by Crissy Field Center. For four weeks each summer, a group of culturally diverse middle school students from San Francisco public schools are introduced to the outdoors through restoration projects, environmental workshops and exploration of the Golden Gate National Parks. The program offers young people a rich combination of experiences including hands-on projects, outdoor investigation and excursions in the field. Youth learn about the biodiversity of Crissy Field by suiting up in waders to explore the marsh, discover the cultural history of the Presidio by hiking along the historic De Anza Trail, utilize cutting-edge technology in the Center’s Media Lab and much, much more!
A valuable bridge that connects urban youth to their larger environment, UTB also helps young people make connections between important environmental issues and their own lives. It gives them the tools they need to take responsibility and make positive contributions to the environmental health of their communities.
The program builds towards a thrilling 3-day, 2-night backpacking trip in the final week. Youth experience the mysteries of nature first-hand and learn useful team-building and outdoor skills. Families, friends and community members are invited to a culminating celebration that showcases the achievements and experiences of participating young people.
UTB II
UTB graduates interested in returning for another summer have the opportunity to apply for UTB II, an intensive three-week environmental leadership program that builds on participant's previous summer experiences. Stewardship and investigation of park resources remain an integral part of the program, but youth concentrate on developing stronger leadership skills and exploring career options while gaining a deeper understanding of environmental issues that affect their community.
To Apply
To be selected for either UTB program, youth must complete an application and participate in an interview with Crissy Field Center staff in the spring. Young people who are open to new experiences, eager to learn new skills and interested in working with youth from all around the city are encouraged to apply. Youth must be enrolled in a San Francisco public school, in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade when applications are due and must be able to make the full time commitment. The program is offered to students at no cost, and youth receive a monetary award pending their successful completion of the program. Students can download an application below, or contact the Middle School Programs Coordinator at (415) 561-7766 to request hardcopy application.
